Iowa Businesses Benefitting from Broadband

By CIA Staff

By Dev Joshi, Research Analyst

According to Connect Iowa’s 2011 Business Technology Assessment, nearly three-quarters of Iowa businesses (73%) use broadband service to handle their business functions. This translates into more than 59,000 broadband-connected business establishments statewide. This is a slight increase the previous year, when 72% of businesses in Iowa subscribed. Even with a high adoption rate among businesses in the state, there are still approximately 22,000 Iowa businesses that still do not use or benefit from broadband.

Broadband service provides several key benefits for Iowa businesses, its workers, as well as the state’s economy:

  • Iowa business establishments that use broadband report median annual revenues that are approximately $300,000 higher than businesses that do not use broadband.
  • Online sales account for approximately $2.9 billion in annual sales revenue.
  • Approximately 21,000 businesses in Iowa allow their employees to work from home instead of commuting to a physical workplace.
  • Two out of three employees (66%) working with Internet-connected businesses use state government websites for businesses purposes, while nearly six out of ten (59%) use federal government websites.
  • Nearly two-thirds of Internet-connected businesses (64%) in Iowa go online to research ways to make their businesses more efficient.
  • Approximately 52,000 businesses in Iowa purchase or place orders for products or service online; while 28,000 businesses use the Internet to sell or accept orders for products or services.
  • Nearly two-fifths or over 24,000 businesses in Iowa advertise or accept job applications online.
